Species and Stocking Rates
True Bluegill
Bluegill are a must for bass ponds, their ability to reproduce multiple times
a year provide plenty of forage for growing bass.
They’re an easy fish to catch, fun for all ages, and they taste great too. Bluegill should be stocked between 250 and 500 per acre.
Largemouth Bass
Largemouth Bass are one of the most popular sport fish in America.
They are a predator species, perfect for keeping Bluegill and Crappie
populations manageable. Bass should be stocked at 50 to 100 per acre.
Channel Catfish
Catfish are easy to manage, eat just about anything, and are
easy to catch. They can grow to larger sizes in the smallest
pond, and tolerate even the worst of water quality conditions. Stocking Rates between 50 and 100 per acre are normal but up to 1000 per acre is possible depending on feeding and aeration.
Grass Carp
Grass carp are a perfect species for aquatic weed control. The are a strictly plant eating fish and do not reproduce in ponds.
Stocking rates are between 2 and 20 per acre depending on what vegetation you are having an issue with and how bad it is.
Fathead Minnows
Primarily used as bait for fishing or for supplementary feeding of other larger fish like bass, crappie, or bluegill. Fathead minnows added to ponds increase the food available for other species and increase growth rates. Depending on your goals stocking rates are between 5 and 20 lbs per acre.
Golden Shiners
Shiners are another wonderful baitfish to push growth on sportfish, especially bass. Shiners grow larger than fathead minnows making them an excellent food source for largemouth. Stocking rates between 5 and 20 lbs per acre depending on your goals.
Hybrid Bluegill
Hybrid Bluegill more aggressive feeders and grow faster then bluegill.
They can be stocked with most other fishes. Hybrids are know to be an
easy aggressive catch and taste just as good as bluegill.
